Farming
The Tigris and Euphrates rivers produced silt that made the soil incredibly fertile which made for good farming ground. This was known as the fertile crescent. The citizens started storing grains and others species of food, underground. The food miraculously reproduced in the form of crops. Now that they had this knowledge they began to grow things such as, wheat, barley, dates, cucumbers, onions, apples and many different herbs and spices. This form of farming helped citizens become closer and more community like. This concept is known as farming culture. The hard work to grow food and raise livestock brought them together to become the first civilization.

Irrigation Systems

The Mesopotamia climate is very dry. Their water supply was unreliable, for example, the snow melting off the Zagros and Taurus Mountains caused violent floods. They would have very little rainfall causing periods of drought. They were desperately searching for a way to control the outcome of different types of weather, their solution was irrigation systems. These were the first forms of dams and canals. They were used to water crops, prevent flooding, and to provide drinking water. This system helped the Mesopotamians create food surpluses. Because of how well the crops were growing, they ended up with extra food! Irrigation systems also helped to prevent water shortages. The day these systems were put into place, the people no longer had to worry about water supply.
